United Motor was a national chain of auto repair shops that operated from the teens until after the war. In 1916, former General Motors boss Billy Durant formed the United Motors Corporation from five companies that manufactured auto parts and accessories. These included Alfred Slaon's Roller Bearing and Charles Kettering's Dayton Engineering Laboratories. Sloan became president of UMC, and he created United Motors Service, Incorporated, to sell the products made by UMC. In 1918, after Durant had regained control of General Motors, UMC became part of General Motors, as did United Motors Service, which continued to sell their products. United Motors Service became a GM division in 1944. In 1971 it was renamed United Delco Division, and in 1974 it was absorbed into AC-Delco Division and the United Motors name was history.
