Metro Authentic Finishes
A little about our business:

The Paint
Metro Authentic Finishes furnishes the finest quality Paints and Vinyl Dyes available to the restoration market.  Since 1989, we have been formulating colors that are 100% authentic. Our paints are mixed in house using a Dupont Paint Mixing System.  We use the OEM paint formulas when available or match our colors to pieces of the original cars and use only the best Dupont Automotive paint.
The Spray Can
We start with the best can available, by SprayOn, a Sherwin-Williams company.  It utilizes the Danvern Spray Nozzle, which atomizes the paint to reduce runs, sags and spitting by spraying in a fan pattern like a professional spray gun.  Another feature of this can is the dip tube, which extends to the bottom of the can allowing all of the paint to be used.  By clearing the dip tube after each use, shelf life is extended beyond other brands.
The Process
Our paints are formulated for use on vinyl, plastic, and metal and will provide excellent results on almost any surface.  We do not thin our paint prior to filling the can, which weighs 16 oz. when filled.  This guarantees the best coverage possible.  We are constantly researching new colors and new makes and models to service and have the capability of packaging any color paint in spray cans with our Custom Packaged Service.

The Pledge
Metro Authentic Finishes is dedicated to the integrity of our products as well as their authenticity.  We stand behind every can of spray paint.  We guarantee the color to be correct and the can to perform as you expect or we will gladly replace it.  As a MAF customer, you cannot lose.  We look forward to your business and feel free to call with any suggestions or questions you have about our paint.

Which Paint to Use?
Lacquer, Enamel or Vinyl Dye
MAF paints are Dupont automotive grade paints unlike most in the industry. These paints will provide professional results when applied correctly. The following are more detailed instructions on using our paints for the best results.
Which Paint to Use:
MAF provides three types of paint for different applications.
  • Lacquer Paint is for interior applications on metal, plastic and fiberglass. Has excellent adhesion properties and offers ease of application.
  • Vinyl Dye for soft materials such as dash pads and armrests.  Remains flexible and soaks into the material.
  • Enamel for high heat and exterior applications such as wheel, trim and engine compartment. Provides a more durable finish that can withstand exposure to the elements.
  • Whether you are using paint or vinyl dye, surface preparation is critical to a professional finish.

Professional Results with Vinyl Dye
How to Prepare Vinyl Surfaces
Vinyl Prep (VP 383) is designed to clean and prepare the surface and to prevent fisheye.
  • Clean surface with fine steel wool.
  • Wipe the surface with a wax and grease remover.
  • Once dry, apply an even coat of VP 383.
  • Wipe dry with a clean lint free rag and then apply another thin uniform coat. Allow to air dry.
  • Vinyl prep should leave the surface with a tacky fell when applied correctly.
How to Apply Vinyl Dye
  • Apply vinyl dye in thin uniform coats once Vinyl Prep is dry.
  • Allow 15 to 20 minutes to pass between coats.
  • Continue to apply coats until the desired color is achieved, usually 3 to 4 coats.
Clear the Nozzle for Another Time
  • Always invert can and spray until clear after each use.
  • Doing so will ensure a clean reusable nozzle for the next use and prolong its life.

Professional Results with Lacquer and Enamel
How to Prepare Surfaces for Lacquer or Enamels
Painting with lacquer and enamel requires a little more prep work.
  • The best finish is achieved by completely stripping surface with high quality stripper.
  • Once stripped, remove any paint left using a wire brush. Wire brush in a drill works best.
  • Prime the surface with MAF’s 2322 adhesion promoter applied in thin even coats.
  • For surfaces not stripped, sand with 180 grit dry or 300 grit wet or finer.
  • Apply adhesion promoter same as above.
  • Paint should then be applied in thin coats with 10-15 minutes between coats.
  • MAF’s finishes are best applied in low humidity to prevent blushing.
  • Temperature should be around 70-85 degrees and the area well ventilated.
  • Wet the floors and walls where you plan on spraying to minimize dust and trash.
How to Apply Lacquer and Enamel Paint
  • Apply color in light, misting coats, moving in a sweeping motion 6 to 8 in. from the surface.
  • The first coat should almost be see through.  Add coats until a uniform finish is achieved.
Clear the Nozzle for Another Time
  • Always invert can and spray until clear after each use.
  • Doing so will ensure a clean reusable nozzle for the next use and prolong its life.

A Word of Caution
The Can - Mixing and preparing can for another time
Shake the can at least 2 minutes, swirling the marble around in the bottom of the can to mix the paint.  Always invert the can after use and clear the nozzle or that may be the last time you use it.
The Color - It may not match
Our colors are from original formulas or matched to samples that haven't seen the light of day.  Please note that when using for touch up, the shade may not be an exact match. The colors on your car may have changed with age, sunlight and wear. The Best Results are always achieved by repainting the entire part rather than trying to touch up 30 year old paint.
